CON L'ADES IN ISTRIA - IN ISTRIA WITH ADES

On august 29th, 1999, an important date in the short history of ADES, around thirty members and supporters gathered in Stridone, a town near Buie d’Istria, on occasion of a fête organised by the local Italian community. The event was an opportunity to lay the groundwork for the beginning of a positive co-operation between ADES and fellow country- people living in Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia. Our association’s firm belief is that the regeneration of the Italian identity of the territories across the border needs to be strongly supported by all the Italians who still live there.
Members of ADES from Udine, Trieste, Grado, Monfalcone, Verona and Padova and Istrian Italians from Rovigo, Fiume, Buie, Pola, Capodistria and Umago met in Stridone on September 29th, 1999. The discussion focused on the possible practical initiatives that ADES and the Italian community of Istria, especially the young people, could undertake together in order to re-unite the julian-dalmatian people, whose unity had been severed by the events of fifty years ago. The starting point of the discussion was a "cultural manifesto" drawn up by a group of Istrian young people with guidelines for actions to be taken on both sides of the border to awaken Italian public opinion that up to now has shown very little interest in julian-dalmatian affairs, to arouse and strengthen the identity of the Italians still residing in those territories. Without dwelling on the usual professions of good intentions and arguments over historical or political matters, the meeting aimed at creating co-operative relations between members of the julian-dalmatian community and fixing actual, positive goals to be attained in the medium term. It was also decided to create a web-site and a magazine managed jointly by ADES and young members residing across the border.
The day went on with the celebrations for the town’s patron saint, in which choirs and accordionists took part. Unfortunately, due to a sudden downpour, the participants were obliged to anticipate their return home. A charming Istrian from Buie, who played the harmonica, entertained the participants on the homeward journey with istrian and triestan music and the neapolitan "Funiculì-funiculà". |
