"No indemnifications, on the contrary restitution of the properties that the media vulgate defines "abandoned." In reality, the properties were confiscated from the legitimate owners escaping from Istria, Venezia Giulia and Dalmazia, all very Italians, which disappeared behind the iron curtain after the Second World War. It is the opinion of the ADES, the Association of the descendents of the exiles, been born six years ago and guided by Pietro Luigi Crasti. Thirty years is the average age of its affiliates, but there is no shortage of less young representation that they feel poorly represented by the exiled most historic associations. They all are indiscriminately animated by a big desire for justice for their grandparent and great-grandparents that had to leave their properties under the threat of being slaughtered, or in the alternative to enjoy the communist heaven up to the end of their days. According to them no "equitable indemnification" will be enough to refund the exiles from the robberies and from the suffered violence. Because of this, the young people of the ADES stand contrary to any "hasty solution" that can leave only with bitterness in the mouth even if only part of the exiles stand for this principal, so they affirm, that it is because of this that they are denied by the Federation of the exiles entry in the organization.

Non le sembra poco realistico chiedere la restituzione di beni ormai dissolti in una miriade di piccole proprietà? Tanto più che appena ottenuta l'indipendenza, Croazia e Slovenia si sono affrettate a cedere ai privati a prezzi stracciati i beni nazionalizzati dai vostri padri in modo da mettervi di fronte al fatto compiuto.
"L'indennizzo va chiesto esclusivamente come ripiego in mancanza di migliori alternative, visto che le nostre pretese giudicate da qualcuno irrealistiche o addirittura oltranziste sono state avanzate con successo altrove. La stessa Slovenia ha già accolto 720 delle 1617 domande di restituzioni di beni, quindi non di indennizzi, avanzate da cittadini austriaci. La Germania ha presentato a Repubblica Ceca e Polonia le nostre stesse richieste: non elemosina ma il rientro dei profughi scacciati con il terrore, la restituzione dei beni usurpati per 57 anni. Perchè noi non possiamo chiedere altrettanto?"

Particularly that as soon as the independence was obtained, Croatia and Slovenia have hastened the surrender to private citizens at reduced prices the properties nationalized from your fathers so to put you in front of the accomplished fact.
"The indemnification must exclusively be asked as an adjustment in lack of best alternatives, considering that our pretensions judged by someone unfeasible or even extremist have been advanced elsewhere with success. The same Slovenia has already welcomed 720 of the 1617 request for restitution of the properties, therefore not of indemnifications, advanced by Austrian citizens. Germany introduced to the Czech Republic and Poland ours same requests: no begging but the reentry of the exiled sent away by terror, the restitution of the properties usurped for 57 years. Why we cannot ask the same?"

Quel è la vostra posizione rispetto alle normative croate e slovene che vietano agli italiani di acquisire proprietà in quei Paesi?
"Che sono norme contrarie, oltre che ai diritti degli esuli, al più elementare diritto internazionale. Mentre vige questo odioso divieto per noi, al contrario i proprietari dei beni confiscati dal regime ex jugoslavo se di nazionalità slovena o croata possono liberamente rientrarne in possesso, così come tutti i cittadini sloveni e croati possono liberamente acquistare beni in tutti i paesi europei."

What is your position with respect to the Croatians and Slovene normative that forbid Italians to acquire properties in those Countries?
"They are norms contrary, to the rights of the exiles, and to the most elementary international right. While this hateful prohibition is in force for us, contrarily the owners of the properties forfeited by the ex Yugoslav regime if of nationality Slovene or Croatian can freely reenter in their possession as all the Slovene and Croatian citizens can freely purchase properties in all the European countries."

Allora, cosa vi aspettate dal governo italiano?
"Anzitutto che neghi il suo assenso all'ingresso della Slovenia nell'UE finchè non ci verranno garantiti almeno gli stessi diritti di cui godono sloveni e croati. Poi, che il governo richieda nè più nè meno le stesse condizioni poste dall'Austria alla Slovenia e dalla Germania alla Repubblica Ceca. Insomma il nostro governo deve decidersi a tutelare i diritti di una parte cospicua dei suoi cittadini, quella della guerra ha pagato il prezzo più alto, tanto più che oggi questioni un tempo di portata esclusivamente nazionale sono state collocate dalle storia sul piano europeo."

Then, what do you expect by the Italian government?
"First of all to deny its assent to the entry of Slovenia in the UE until we will obtain at least the same guarantee for the rights given to enjoy to Slovenes and Croatians. Then, that the government requires no more and no less than the same conditions set by Austria to Slovenia and Germany to the Czech Republic. In short our government has to decide to protect the rights of a conspicuous part of its citizens, the one that has paid the highest price of the war, so much that to day matters once exclusively of national course has been moved from history to the European level."

E alla Federazione cosa chiedete?
"Rispettiamo e consideriamo quanto si sta impegnando a ottenere, cioè non solo equi indennizzi ma anche la restituzione dei beni dove è possibile, nel caso di proprietà non nazionalizzate nei casi contemplati dai trattati vigenti. Ma chiediamo anche un tavolo comune dove siedano non solo gli esuli della Federazione ma anche quelli di altre associazioni che da quella Federazione sono escluse ma desiderano egualmente far sentire la loro voce."

And to the Federation what do you ask?
"We respect and do consider how much is trying to get, that is not only equitable indemnifications but also the restitution of the properties where it is possible, in the case of ownership not nationalized in the cases contemplated by the existing treaties. But we also ask a common table where not only sits the exiles of the Federation but also those of other associations that are excluded by the Federation that equally wish to make their voice heard."
